The photographic jump that Huawei has starred in this generation, thanks to the potential mounted on his Huawei P20 Pro, has made his phones get even more media attention. And we have looked forward to the presentation that has occurred today, the one related to its next generation of Mate phones, the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro.
The caveat with this release is that, unlike the Huawei P family, both Mate come with three cameras in the back, although with less power in the Mate 20 than in the Pro model. And it is precisely the first one that concerns us, the one that lets us see the evolution in a season from Mate 10 last year to understand when the Chinese manufacturer is. Especially at this time when he debuts his new brain, the Kirin 980. So, are we going with evolution?
Possibly, the most significant visual change of this new Huawei Mate 20 with respect to the previous generation has to do with its screen. In Mate 10 we still had a 16: 9 panel, with QHD resolution and that placed the percentage of use of the frontal in a not inconsiderable 81.6%. But for this 2018, the Mate go up to the 'notch' although in the Mate 20 it will be quite reduced.
In this year, with the Mate 20 we are facing screens 18.7: 9, the percentage that Samsung promotes with its Infinity Display but that here is supported by a tiny 'notch' in the top center of the panel. The resolution stands at 2,244 x 1,080 pixels and we remain in the league of LCDs, since the OLED passes only to the Mate 20 Pro model.
Both models are passed to the 'notch', although the substantial change is that of Mate 20, which last year had a 16: 9 panel
With this screen jump, the phone also grows. 5.9 inches in 2017, 6.53 inches in 2018 and in return we gain almost one centimeter in height, while the model shrinks in width and stays in thickness. Now we have a Mate 20 of 158.2 millimeters high, 77.2 millimeters wide and 8.3 millimeters thick. Nearly 16 centimeters of phone, something to consider for lovers of compact phones. Of course, the Huawei Mate catalog is not the place to look for a phone like that. The Mate 20 Pro stands at 157.8 x 72.3 x 8.6 mm.
The Mate 10 Pro did have a 18: 9 screen, however, and now its evolution is less noticeable, although that does not spare him from gaining an eyebrow on the screen. The screen is cropped from 6 to 6.3 inches, stretching the initial QHD to 3,120 x 1,440 pixels in 19.5: 9 format. By the way, also protected with Gorilla Glass and being compatible with HDR10, like his younger brother.
Apart from the evident power jump experienced by the passage of the Kirin 970 to the Kirin 980, something that happens in all the processors of the market when they are renewed, the new brain includes something curious and that can suppose a before and after for Huawei. Last year they introduced their NPU, the neural processing unit to execute artificial intelligence code, and now we do not have an NPU but two. The new Dual NPU promises to run everything faster and cover more tasks, and that will affect both the phone and the camera.
In one year we have also advanced in construction technology, going from 10 to 7 nanometers and achieving greater energy efficiency. Something that surely will come in handy to see what evolution is in a pile that maintains the size but for which more autonomy is expected. 4,000 mAh (4,200 mAh in the Pro) repeat in this new generation, aboard a Mate 20 that continues with fast charging and takes it one step further, jumping from 22.5W to 40W with the new Super Charge and a special charger of the house. We are looking forward to seeing those load times.
As for the memories, RAM impassive with the same 4GB of the past year but interesting jump in internal storage. If in Mate 10 we had 64GB as the basic and only model, in Mate 20 we jump to 128GB. And all this respecting the microSD tray, so we can place an additional 256GB to the formula, turning the phone into a 384GB model of internal storage if we wish. An interesting figure to take into account.
Again we went to the Pro and here there is a leap forward also sensitive in terms of memories, it shares the brain with Mate 20. In the Mate 10 Pro we had 4GB and 6GB in RAM, and here we go to 6GB of base, taking the internal memory up to 128GB in its superior version. As in the case of Mate 20, we have a tray for microSD.
Huawei opted for a dual camera for its Huawei Mate 10. The phone landed with a 12 megapixel main lens accompanied by 20 megapixels specific to black and white photographs, but in the new generation everything multiplies. Specifically, by 1.5, because not only the Mate 20 Pro bets on the triple lens but also the Mate 20. The difference between models lies in power, but not in versatility.
The two lenses of the Mate 10 become 3 in the new Mate 20, and we gain optical zoom in the generational leap. Now we find the same 12 megapixel main camera, now with f / 1.8 lens, with the same 20 megapixel black and white camera, now with f / 2.2 lens, but we won a third camera with 8 megapixels f / 2.4. As we said, the Mate 20 is more versatile than the last generation, although it is in power behind the Mate 20 Pro, or that Huawei P20 Pro itself that started the trend of the three rear cameras.
The P20 Pro was the only one of its series to have three cameras, now in the Mate we have them in two of the three models
On the front there is a more than considerable power jump. If the Mate 10 arrived with 8 megapixels f / 2.0, in Mate 20 we now have 24 megapixels with the same f / 2.0 lens. Photographs three times larger for the new front sensor, intended for selfies, videoconferences and all kinds of material likely to end up in social networks or messaging apps. The photographic jump of this Mate 20 is sensitive, and we already want to put it to the test.
If you look at the Mate 20 Pro, the cameras reach their maximum quality. The main sensor is 40 megapixels f / 1.8 with wide-angle lens, 20 megapixels are for the sensor in black and white and the zoom itself is identical, with 8 megapixels f / 2.4. Offers up to three increases. The front camera increases to 24 megapixels, as in the case of Mate 20 normal.
And also in other aspects, such as the fact that the new model arrives directly with Android 9.0 Pie and EMUI 9, having to wait for generations past the update arrives. Committed, but still pending. But connectivity is perhaps where this logical jump between Mate 10 and Mate 20 in the Huawei catalog is most appreciated.
For the new Mate 20 we won the 4G, which is now in category 21, but we keep the WiFi 5 or WiFi ac. It is also advanced in Bluetooth, which is now 5.0 and other features such as the NFC chip, the USB type C port or the headphone jack are maintained. There is a gain between last year and this, however, that is worth mentioning, and that is that we now have FM radio.
We closed this evolution with the classic specifications table, so you can face the characteristics of both models and see if it is worth going for the new generation or getting the pass, with the consequent decrease in the sale price that has suffered until Now, and that will be even greater when the Mate 20 steps on the stores.
